Our Partner: Demos

A dynamic “think-and-do” tank that powers
the movement for a just, inclusive,
multiracial democracy.

Through cutting-edge policy research, inspiring litigation and deep relationships with grassroots organizations, Demos champions solutions that will create a democracy and economy rooted in racial equity. Its name means “the people.” It is the root word of democracy, and it reminds us that in America, the true source of our greatness is the diversity of our people.

During the 2020 - 2021 academic year, Poetic Justice Institute will be in conversation with Demos as to how language can help shape and transform our society. In addition, we will be raising funds to support Demos activities and initiatives.

Demos @ Work

Campaigns

Demos turns its ideas into public policy change that will have a positive impact on the lives of the young people, people of color, women, and working-class people of all races. We use campaign tools and tactics to seize short- to medium-term opportunities to move progressive ideas into strong public policy at all levels of government.

Litigation

Demos battles in the nation’s courts to tear down barriers to democracy, confront exploitation in our economy, and advance racial justice. Our lawsuits combat voter suppression, much of it rooted in the history and present reality of racial subordination and white supremacy. We take on unlawful voter purges, failure to provide voter registration opportunities, language discrimination in election materials, prison-based gerrymandering, and disenfranchisement of people accused or convicted of crimes.

Policy & Research

The Demos policy and research team develops race-forward progressive policy ideas and analysis for policymakers and grassroots organizations fighting for economic, social, and political power.

Partnerships

Demos works closely with grassroots organizations across the country to build a movement that enables us not only to win public policy change in our campaigns, but to shift the “narrative”—the very understanding of how progressive change can happen— for the long term.
