José Alvergue reads from scenery, winner of the POL Editor’s Prize, just published by Fordham Press. A Salvadorean immigrant and parent, Alvergue reflects on the status of personhood in America between racial supremacy and racial disavowal. After a 15-minute reading, Alvergue will discuss his work and his creative process.
A graduate of both the Cal Arts Writing (MFA) and Buffalo Poetics (PhD) programs, José Alvergue engages both critical and creative language, often bridging them, overlapping them, and subverting them. He is the author of three books of poetry, and Associate Professor of Contemporary Literature and Transnationalism at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. José’s third book, scenery, was selected by Fordham University Press as the winner of the Poets Out Loud Editor’s Prize. He was also selected as the winner of Tupelo Quarterly’s TQ16 Open Prize, and has been a finalist for a number of book prizes.
